Inspring women: Katherine Switzer

This is a photo of Katherine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon in 1967 five years before women were officially allowed to compete. She signed up as “K V Switzer.” That’s a race official trying to physically remove her from the course and her boyfriend elbowing the official out of the way. Katherine went on to win the 1974 NYC Marathon.

She is quoted as saying.“If you are losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon.”
